RMC Football Falls to Cortland in NCAA Semifinals - Randolph-Macon College (2024)

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Brecht Heuchan (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay) threw for 151 yards in the second half as No. 8 Randolph-Macon fell to No. 11 Cortland 49-14 in the semifinals of the Division III Football Championship.

How it Happened:

• The Red Dragons scored a touchdown on their first possession and returned a punt for a touchdown in taking a 14-0 lead in the first period.
• Cortland added three touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 35-0 at the half.
• The Red Dragons added a touchdown early in the third period before Heuchan led RMC on a 75-yard scoring drive. Sophom*ore running back Cameron Chatmon (Wake, N.C./Green Level) powered into the end zone from three yards out to make it 42-7 midway through the third quarter.
• Cortland tallied its final TD late in the third period to go up 49-7.
• The Yellow Jackets would drive 88 yards in 11 plays in the fourth quarter for their final score of the game. Senior running back Nick Hale (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) plowed through from two yards away to make the final 49-14.

By The Numbers:

• Heuchan completed 11 of 17 passes for 151 yards, all in the second half.
• Senior wide receiver Holden Hodge (Elizabeth City, N.C./Northeastern) was targeted eight times and had eight catches for 87 yards. He had 47 yards after catch.
• Sophom*ore wide receiver Jason Moore (Craven County, N.C./Havlock) had 152 all-purpose yards, with 78 on kickoff returns, 53 on receptions and 21 rushing yards.
• Senior linebacker Tony Skinner (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) and junior linebacker Jackson Deaver (Fayetteville, N.C./Terry Sanford) paced the RMC defense with nine tackles each. Senior cornerback Ricky Thompson (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) recorded eight tackles and one pass breakup.

For The Record:

• Hale's touchdown in the fourth quarter was the 41st of his career, a program record.
• Senior quarterback Drew Campanale (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) finished with 4,871 career passing yards, the fifth-highest total in program history
• Randolph-Macon finished the season with 13 victories, the most in program history.
